NEWS ABOUT THE NY 40TH

• Although this is not recent news, I have failed to mention a great book for people wanting to know more about the NY40th. I have mentioned Floyds book in the introduction to this web site but there is another great book that was published in 2000 called "EYE of the STORM", the Free Press, 1230 Avenue of the Americas, New Youk, NY 10020.  The book is "written" and illustrated by Private Robert Knox Sneden of  the NY40th company E.  In 1994, four tattered scrapbooks were found in a Connecticut bank vault which yieled a treasure trove of more thatn five hundred watercolors that vividly depict the war. These scrapbooks plus a five thousand page illustrated memoir are the basis for the book. He was later transfered out of the 40th to Headquarters and became its mapmaker.  The book is done like his diary giving the date and his thought for that day.   For example::  September 29, 1864  "The 40th Regiment had a sham fight today which resulted in filling up the hospital with as many wounded and maimed men as if there had been a big skirmish with the enemy.....
